In English, the potential is some dormant quality a person possesses that would help him to succeed in his life or achieve something of his interest.
If you are pointing to the term 'potential'(or electric potential/potential difference) in physics, it will be understood as the work done in bringing a unit positive test charge from infinity to a given point. If you are pointing to potential energy, then it is defined as the energy a charge has due to its position relative to other charges(i.e energy possessed by a body due to its shape of position).
