what is the hybradization of H2O
Hello student ,
Hybridization of H20 is sp3 hybridization . As H20 has the tetrahedral arrangement of the electron pairs about 0 atom that requires sp3 hybridization .
Further for hybridization we have following formula -
Take valence electrons of central atom, add monovalent surrounding atoms in it and divide the whole by two and if answers comes 2 is (sp), 3(sp2), 4(sp3), 5(dsp3), 6(d2sp3), & 7 (d3sp3).
In case of H2O, central atom is oxygen, so take its 6-valence electrons, and add two monovalent hydrogen atoms, divide the whole by two as (6 + 2 /2) = 8/2 = 4
So the answers is 4 , which says sp3 hybridization in H20 .
Hope it will help you !
H2Ohas 2(1) + 6 = 8 valence electrons.H2Ohas a tetrahedral arrangement of the electron pairs about the O atom that requires sp3hybridization. Two of the four sp3 hybrid orbitals are used to form bonds to the two hydrogen atoms, and the other two sp3 hybrid orbitals hold the two lone pairs on oxygen.
Hope it will help you.
