A main river is basically that part of the river which starts from the origin and is not a distributary or branch of any other river.
A main river flows into a larger stream and then bifurcates into various number of distributaries. Distributaries are the branches of a main river.
Examples-
- Kollidam river is a distributary of the Kaveri River.
- Nara river is a distributary of Indus River.
- Akhtuba River is a distributary of the Volga river.
So the main rivers in the above mentioned examples are Kaveri river, Indus river and Volga river.
