The GEM Hospital and Research Centre, Coimbatore, as a name of repute for providing top surgical and research facilities, especially in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), besides imparting special medical education. The candidates for admission into the postgraduate fellowship programs at GEM Hospital are scrupulously picked from a count of highly qualified applicants. To ensure that extraordinarily gifted and intelligent candidates are granted admission into specialized training programs, GEM follows a very competitive selection process
Generally, the eligibility criteria require the applicants to meet the following educational qualifications:
- An MBBS degree from a recognized university
- A valid registration certificate with the Medical Council of India or the respective State Medical Council
- A postgraduate degree (MS/DNB) in the surgical specialty relevant to applying for the fellowship
- Clinical experience in the relevant specialty may be required for some of these programs.
The institute adopts a laborious admission process covering skills and experiences of the candidates, educational background, and capacity to succeed in their chosen fields to ensure that those who are admitted have sufficient experience to be truly able candidates for the intensive fellowship training offered.
Application Process
The fellowship program at the GEM Hospital and Research Centre, Coimbatore, consists of up to six applications subdivided into stages:
1. Application Submission: Interested candidates will visit the official website for downloading the application form. The application has to be duly and completely filled in.
2. Document Submission: Candidates are to submit along with the application form:
- MBBS certificate and mark sheets
- Postgraduate degree (MS/DNB) certificate & mark sheets
- Medical registration certificate (valid)
- Clinical experience (if any)
- Reference letters (if required)
- All other relevant certificates and achievements
3. Application Review: Applications will be received and reviewed by the admission committee, which will decide upon the applicants on the basis of their academic performances, clinical experiences, and their suitability to their designated fellowship programs.
4. Interview Process: Candidates selected for interviews will be called at this point. Interview interactions may include discussions on clinical knowledge, research interests, and career objectives.
5. Selection and Offer: On the basis of discussions held during the review of applications and the interviews, candidates successful for admission into respective fellowship programs were made an offer.
6. Selected candidates must successfully accept by the stated deadline, i.e., acceptance, payment of the requisite fees, and submission of further documentation.
Admission Process Per Degree
The GEM Hospital and Research Centre, Coimbatore, offers six full-time postgraduate fellowships for training in advanced surgical techniques:
Fellowships in Minimally Invasive Surgery: One fellow is accepted for training in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical techniques across specialties.
Fellowship in Hepatobiliary Surgery: This fellowship trains fellows in liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic surgeries through minimally invasive approaches. One seat is currently available.
Fellowship in Endo-Gynaecology: There is one seat available for this fellowship, which trains gynecologists in advanced endoscopic procedures applicable to various gynecological conditions.
Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery: This program has one seat open and is for training in minimally invasive techniques for disorders and cancers of the colorectum.
Fellowship in Esophageal Surgery: One seat is available for training in advanced surgical techniques for Disorders and Diseases of the Esophagus under this fellowship.
Fellowship in Minimal Invasive Onco Surgery: This fellowship provides two seats for training in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of cancers in various specialties.
Candidates for admission to any of the above programs would have to have passed MBBS and postgraduate (MS/DNB) in the relevant surgical specialty. Their admission process may take into consideration their academic performance, clinical experience, and appropriateness for advanced surgical training.
