Can one ordinary object have ten unexpected uses? And can you identify the single best solution when several answers seem possible? These are the kinds of thinking skills tested through Divergent and Convergent Thinking in MICAT 2027. Conducted by MICA, the exam is scheduled for December 5, 2026, for MICAT I and February 12, 2027, for MICAT II. Understanding both question types, practising examples and learning how to approach creative problems can help you prepare for this distinctive section.

Divergent and Convergent Thinking assess different aspects of problem-solving. One focuses on generating possibilities, while the other focuses on identifying the most appropriate answer.
Feature | Divergent Thinking | Convergent Thinking |
Main objective | Generate multiple ideas | Find the best answer |
Approach | Creative and exploratory | Analytical and logical |
Focus | Originality and flexibility | Accuracy and reasoning |
Typical task | Suggesting alternative uses | Identifying a logical conclusion |
Key skill | Thinking beyond conventional solutions | Evaluating options systematically |
Both skills are relevant to MICAT because the examination assesses creative as well as analytical aptitude.
Divergent Thinking encourages you to explore different possibilities rather than settle immediately on the first idea. These questions may involve unusual uses, alternative solutions, associations or creative interpretations.
These questions ask you to suggest different uses for an ordinary object.
Example: What are some alternative uses for a newspaper besides reading it?
Possible answers include wrapping fragile objects, creating paper decorations, protecting surfaces during painting and making papier-mâché crafts.
Approach: Move beyond the object's primary purpose. Think about its material, shape, flexibility and other practical applications.
These questions present a situation and ask you to develop innovative solutions.
Example: A small bookstore is receiving fewer visitors. Suggest ways to attract more customers without reducing book prices.
Possible ideas include organising author interactions, creating reading clubs, hosting storytelling sessions and collaborating with local schools.
Approach: Consider different audiences, available resources and practical constraints. Aim for solutions that are both original and relevant to the problem.
These questions test your ability to connect words, concepts or situations in meaningful ways.
Example: What ideas or concepts come to mind when you hear the word “bridge”?
Possible associations include connection, communication, transportation, relationships and overcoming differences.
Approach: Explore literal and abstract meanings. Avoid restricting yourself to the first association that comes to mind.
These questions encourage you to imagine situations outside everyday experience and consider their consequences.
Example: What might happen if people could communicate only through pictures for an entire day?
Possible consequences include increased use of visual symbols, misunderstandings involving abstract ideas and greater reliance on illustrations.
Approach: Consider practical, social and behavioural consequences. Develop multiple possibilities instead of focusing on a single outcome.
Convergent Thinking involves analysing information, evaluating alternatives and identifying the most appropriate answer. These questions reward logical reasoning rather than the number of ideas generated.
These questions require you to identify relationships and draw conclusions from the given information.
Example: All roses in a garden are flowers. Some flowers are red. Can we conclude that some roses are red?
A. Yes, definitely
B. No, roses cannot be red
C. The information is insufficient
D. All roses are red
Correct answer: C. The information is insufficient
Explanation: The statement that some flowers are red does not establish whether those flowers include roses.
Pattern questions require you to identify a rule governing a sequence of numbers, letters or symbols.
Example: Find the next number in the series: 3, 6, 12, 24, __.
A. 36
B. 42
C. 48
D. 54
Correct answer: C. 48
Explanation: Each number is multiplied by 2 to obtain the next number. Therefore, 242=48.
These questions ask you to select the most suitable option based on stated objectives or constraints.
Example: A company wants to reduce delivery delays without increasing its fleet size. Which action is most appropriate?
A. Accept more orders without changing operations
B. Optimise delivery routes and schedules
C. Reduce delivery staff without reviewing demand
D. Stop tracking delivery times
Correct answer: B. Optimise delivery routes and schedules
Explanation: Route and schedule optimisation can improve delivery efficiency without requiring additional vehicles.
These questions assess your ability to compare options and select the one that best meets a particular objective.
Example: A brand wants to improve customer trust. Which action most directly supports this objective?
A. Make exaggerated product claims
B. Hide negative customer feedback
C. Communicate product information transparently
D. Increase advertising frequency without changing the message
Correct answer: C. Communicate product information transparently
Explanation: Honest and clear communication helps customers make informed decisions and supports trust.
Practise the following questions to understand how these skills work in different situations.

A. 50
B. 60
C. 70
D. 80

A café wants to attract more students during afternoon hours without offering discounts. Which option is most suitable?
A. Remove seating areas
B. Introduce quiet study spaces and charging points
C. Reduce the afternoon menu
D. Close earlier on weekdays
Correct answer: B. Introduce quiet study spaces and charging points
Explanation: Study-friendly facilities address students' needs and may make the café more attractive without reducing prices.
A balanced preparation strategy should develop creativity without neglecting logical accuracy. Practise both skills regularly instead of focusing exclusively on one question type.
Choose everyday objects such as a paper clip, cardboard box or umbrella. List different uses for each object and try to move beyond obvious answers.
Practise number series, verbal reasoning, relationships and conclusion-based questions. Focus on identifying the rule or evidence that supports an answer.
Creative answers should address the actual problem. Consider whether each idea is practical, original and consistent with the given conditions.
For convergent questions, identify the reasoning error behind each incorrect choice. For divergent exercises, examine whether your ideas are genuinely different or merely variations of the same suggestion.
Once you understand the question types, practise short timed sets. This can help you generate ideas efficiently and make decisions without overthinking.
