I hope you have cleared your class 12th with a decent percentage or grades.
Here are the requirements to become an Income Tax Officer.
- Completion of Bachelor's degree by any stream.
Now here you have two options(Below enlisted) to proceed towards yours dreams. With any of these two exams mentioned below you can become Income Tax Officer. Before that you must know that the below mentioned exam is conducted not only for solo purpose of selecting students as Income Tax officer but there are various posts students get and out of those one is Income Tax Officer.
- SSC (Staff Selection Commission) Exam
- UPSC Exam
Some major rules and procedure for SSC exam(CGL):-
- Age of the candidate should be between 18 to 27.
- Candidate must be graduated from any recognized university or college.
In SSC CGL, there are four tiers of exam. Tier 1 and Tier 2 are objective based exam whereas Tier 3 is descriptive exam where you may be to write letters, article etc. In Tier 3 itself your personal interview will be done. Tier 4 is document verification part and there your basic computer skill will also be checked.
Some major rules and procedure for UPSC exam:-
- Age of the candidate should be between 18 to 32
- Candidate must be graduated from any recognized university or college.
UPSC consists of two exams Prelims and Mains.
Prelims has two paper.
- General Studies
- CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test)
After clearing Prelims, you have to qualify MAINS exam too. Then Interview will be done.

After completion of 12th from any recognised board, the aspirants are supposed to do their Bachelor's degree from any recognised University, in any disciple.

Dear candidate, after class 12 th you need to take any bachelors degree like Btech,Bsc,BA,BBA,BCA,Bcom,etc. Then you can become an Income Tax Officer either by clearing SSC or UPSC
Income Tax Officer by SSC:
- Minimum age is 18 and maximum is 27.
- 3 years relaxation to OBC and 5 years relaxation is given to SC/ST.
- Some requirements need to be met for physical fitness. You can check at official site.
- Paper is of Tier 1 and Tier 2, then there will be Interview.
- Tier 1 has 2 papers of 2 hours each based on arithmetic and general awareness. Tier 1 is known as Pre or Preliminary Examination.
- Tier 2 has English Comprehension, language, arithmetic and General awareness. It is total of 14 hours with some gap in between. Tier 2 is Mains.
- Tier 3 interviews will happen to check your mental ability and personality skills. Sometimes they also test your computer skills like data speed of 2000 words per 15 minutes or something.
- Cutoffs are different every year due to difficulty level of paper and number of vacancies for that particular post.
Income Tax Officer by UPSC:
- The age limit for this exam is 32 years and you can attempt the exam six times. However, after clearness the UPSC examination you will get the position of Assistant Commission of Income Tax. Which falls under the Group A post.
- Through UPSC, you can apply in IRS.
- It also has 3 rounds. Prelims, Mains and Interview.
- The Preliminary Paper consists of General Studies and one Optional Paper. List is given on their official website. It is just a qualifying round of 450 marks.
- The Mains is of total 2600 marks which consists of 1 General Essay type paper, 1 English paper, 1 Language Essay type, 2 General Studies paper, 4 optional subjects paper.
- After mains, there is an interview round after qualifying which you are selected as an IRS officer.
