Information about marine engineerine and what are the courses required for it?
Hello Sanjay
Marine Engineering is an exciting career option for students who are interested to pursue the course. It is an exciting but challenging field.
Travelling across the sea, exploring the depths of ocean is cherished by people but the challenging task is of Engineers who build and maintain the ships, speed boats, submarines, etc.
Challenge for them is the development and to apply the engineering techniques and technologies to make the vessels more durable that it is capable to survive the enormous water pressures at the surface of ocean or at greater depths.
Maintaining a ship’s machinery is also a responsibility of Marine Engineers. They have to use devices such as electric motors, propulsive engines, etc to ensure proper functioning.
Courses Offered
Undergraduate (B.E/B.Tech) and Postgraduate (M.E/M.Tech) programmes in Marine Engineering are offered by various Engineering colleges.
B.Tech in Marine Engineering is a four years’ duration programme. M.Tech is of the duration of two years.
Candidate can opt for M.Tech in Marine Engineering after completing B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
After M.tech if candidate is interested in contuning studies then he/she can go for PhD.
Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process
Candidate should have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathemaatics and English as the compulsory subjects. Candidates should also have scored 75 percent marks in the examination to be eligible for admission to the B.Tech programme. Relaxation in the marks is also given for candidates beloning to the reserves categories.
Admission to the course is done on the basis of entrance exams conducted. For admission to IITs, candidate have to appear and qualify the JEE Main and JEE Advanced entrance exam.
For admission to the M.tech programme, GATE entrance exam is conducted.
Some other entrance exams are also conducted such as CUSAT CAT entrance exam for admission to B.Tech Marine Engineering in Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
It should also be noted that Eligibility Criteria and admission process vary from college to college. So, you will have to check the detailed criteria of the college/University where you wish to apply for admission.
In the B.Tech progamme candidates learn about fluid mechanics, Electrical Technology, Marine Construction and Welding, etc.
Candidates have to also do project work, laboratory work, dissertations, etc. For complete and detailed knowledge.
Scope and Opportunities
There are huge opportunities for Marine Engineers. There is also decent industry demand for Marine Engineers.
Initially Marine Engineers work on the merchant Navy vessels after working there and gaining experience they can rise to the level of Chief Engineer.
The job profiles of the Marine Engineers are as Marine Engineer, Navy Weapon Engineering Officer, Marine Engineering Officer, Harbor Master and Pumpman.
Skills Required
Engineers should be good at basics and course subjects. Various ship designing software like NAPA, AVEVA, AUTOCAD, CATIA etc. and other software like ANSYS,MATLAB etc. Also help them to perform better. Engineers should also be well informed about the use of latest technology and have a deep knowledge of the modern software.
