The doors to IITs open after for the engineering students after class 12. The first step is to write the JEE Mains examination which happen in the first week of April. The syllabus is completely based on what you studied in 11th and 12th standard. The students who clear the main examination with certain cutoff marks( for general its 130approx. out of 360). Then the students will get a change to write the JEE advanced examination. The top performing students will be given rank according to the score and will be granted admission to IITs.
Some of the major IITs are IIT Bombay,Delhi, Guwahati,Madras. The students who clear JEE Mains also are called for online counciling for admission into NITs and government colleges across the country except IITs.

In order to get admission in IITs, you have to first register for and take JEE Main, qualify in it by being in the top 2,24,000 candidates who are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced. Here again, you have to register for and qualify in JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is the entrance test for IIT admissions. Once you qualify in JEE Advanced, you have to participate in JoSAA counselling which looks after the seat allotment for admission into the IITs. However, as the application form for the first stage exam (JEE Main) is closed now, you can fill the application form for JEE Main 2019 from December 2018 onwards.
