A PhD is not just an academic degree, it is a research-based programme that demands rigorous evaluation, close supervision, field and lab work, and original contributions to knowledge. As a result, PhD programmes in an online mode raises concerns about whether they provide the academic credibility and value similar to a PhD in traditional mode.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has set clear regulations regarding what constitutes a valid PhD in India. As per the UGC guidelines, fully online PhD programmes are not recognised. While part-time PhD models are approved by UGC, they are also equivalent for employment, academic appointments, or government recognition within the country.

Can you Pursue a PhD Degree Online?

Earning a PhD in India is considered one of the highest academic achievements. Traditionally, doctoral programmes require extensive research, and close supervision. However, many wonder if it is possible to earn a PhD degree online in India, especially with advancements in virtual labs and digital libraries.

As of now, UGC (University Grants Commission) and AICTE (All India Council For Technical Education) do not officially recognise PhD programmes in online mode. Since PhD programmes involve regular coursework, in-person research supervision, and physical presence for lab-based research or fieldwork, these elements are difficult to perform in a fully online format, thus impacting the programme’s academic integrity.

Online PhD seems an appealing option for working professionals, however, pursuing a fully online PhD in India is not UGC approved and recognised. Aspiring scholars must consider a part-time PhD format that ensures academic rigour through direct mentorship and research access.

Is Pursuing An Online PhD A Scam?

A PhD degree in India is one of the top academic qualifications, requiring rigorous supervision, and coursework with greater academic integrity. With critical components utilised within this programme, these practical elements cannot be fully replicated in an online format. The lack of hands-on guidance, and in-person assessments makes an online PhD academically weak and often misleading to students.

However, the rise of online education has opened doors to fake college degrees. As per the UGC guidelines, fully online PhD programmes are not recognised in India. Institutions offering PhDs without adhering to these standards operate outside UGC academic framework. Students must always verify UGC approval for online courses and remain cautious for degree credibility before enrolling.

While not all PhDs are scams, UGC approved part-time PhD programs for working professionals offer a credible pathway to earn a doctoral degree without compromising on jobs or other responsibilities. These doctoral programmes include mandatory academic standards through coursework, periodic campus visits, and regular interaction with research supervisors, ensuring credibility while providing flexibility to balance work and research commitments.

Hello dear candidate,

Yes, you can apply for an integrated at IISc but only if your B.Sc. in medical laboratory technician is recognized as a science degree (biological or chemical sciences) and should include subjects like:- biology, chemistry, or biochemistry.

IISc may not accept you if your course is more technical or training based. So it would be better if you do M.Sc. in a science subject and then apply for a regular PhD.
