After completing numerous rounds of training in Mussoorie, Hyderabad, and district training, IPS officers are awarded the rank of ASP. They receive an upgrade to SP after a while (Superintendent of Police). Consequently, SP is an acronym for rank or designation. A member of the State Civil Service or an IPS officer may serve as superintendent of police.
