I would generalize everything here as marks, subjects, the way of conducting exam etc are different for each college.In first year of B.tech all the branches would have almost same subjects.There are two exams conducted foe each semester

• Mid-term exam (theory as well as practicals)
• Semester exam ( theory as well as practicals)

You will have 2-3 mid exams  although 3rd mid exam is exceptional( not every college would conduct third mid exam).Avegrage or best of two mid exams will be taken if you have third mid exam in your college then you can write it if you want to get better marks or if you have missed 1st or 2nd mid exam.Mid exams will be for 25 or 30 marks, it varies from college to college.

There comes semester exams after 5-6 months.The marks will be different for each college like say 70 or 75 marks for a paper.You need to score very well in this as it will affect your percentage/CGPA.Your final marks in each subject will be the sum of mid exam+semester exam.The passing mark will be like 35-40 marks depends on college.If you fail in  a subject then you can give supplementry exam later in 4 years.It is better if you don't get any backlogs.

Subjects in first year are fundamentals.From second year you will study core subjects.It is important that you have to concentrate more on core subject as they will really help you gaining a great knowledge on what you are learning.

Every college follows its own proceedure so,they will be giving you proper guidance about the exam.But generally there will be 4 subjects and a lab in first year,for every subject there will be some credits offered if you get enough credits you will be promoted.

If you have joined in JNTU affiliated college then you will have two semesters in your first year. You will have subjects such as Maths-1, chemistry, Basic engineering electronics and English in your 1st semester with 2 labs (Chemistry, BEE) and an Engineering Workshop. The second semester consists of subjects such as Physics, Maths-2, Programming for problem solving and Physics and PPS labs. There are two midterms conducted for both subjects and labs . The external for labs is conducted in the college itself. And the subjective exams externals are conducted in the given centres. Based on you r performance in all the above mentioned categories you will be given Grades in your result . All the best
