Most medical colleges do not compel students to stay in the hostel for the first year itself, but it is mostly the college's policy. Some colleges advise or even demand to stay in the hostel so that the student is available for classes and co-curricular activities since the initial years would be very demanding and full of engagements.

If the college doesn't insist on hostel stay, you can choose a flat close to the college. You should note that off-campus living will reduce the exposure to peers, and some colleges have curfew rules or require you to keep informed of the college activities. Ensure that this is not the case in your particular college and thereby confirm the policy from your college administration.
