Yes cancelled cheque is must and no substitute.
Cancled cheque of respective bank accounts is must.

See the cancelled cheque is the cheque with cancelled written on it across and this renders the cheque invalid so that no one can misuse it. They ask for a cancelled checque so that they can refund the amount if seat allotment is not given or the student withdraws. There is no substitute to this.
