The first paper of JEE mains is mandatory for all while the second paper i meant for the students who aspire for Architecture course as well.
If you have got good drawing skills and gifted with lot of creativity and imaginability then you should definitely write second paper as well.
Let's assume now that you are talking about MAINS only that is about the exams being held twice in a year. So it's up-to you when you want to appear. You can appear only once or twice your wish. Your best score will be considered for being eligible for JEE Advance. And the in JEE ADVANCE you need to clear both the papers 1 and 2 mandatorily which will be taken on the same day to get into IITS.
