Hey Karthikeya Revinisetti,
First of all you need to understand if you really want to be a designer not developer. Designer creates the art assets such as character models, environment etc. while Developer does the programming work for the game. I'd recommend you to read the answer I posted above, before you choose designing over development.
To become a Designer you need to be proficient in 3D as well as 2D art. Contrary to general opinion 2D art is much more difficult that 3D one. It's so difficult that 2D characters are generally created in 3D environment and then rendered in 2D.
Creating a 2D art without using any 3D software requires manual sketching on a drawing paper. You need to create prototypes and storyboards on papers with just your pencil. Thus it requires you to be good in sketching.
Apart from that you'd need to be good in 2D softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Flash, Toon Boom Pro.
For 3D you need to be proficient in Modelling, texturing, rigging, lighting, animation and many more different aspect of it. Fortunately there are various institutes which can give you a basic idea about all of them and you generally need just one software for all of your 3D needs, such as Autodesk Maya or 3D Max (also from Autodesk), sometimes for better lighting you'd need V-Ray, but that's for real professionals.
Since Autodesk softwares are too costly for Indian Markets (INR 50K to 200K for single software), startups in India are looking for designers who can work on Opensource softwares such as Blender (free of cost). So having it in your inventory would be an added advantage for you (I'll hire you as soon as you mention Blender).
You can take any animation course which covers the above mentioned topics for a start. But remember most of the animation institutes gives you general idea about the topics and do not follow an in-depth practical approach (based on experience of some of my colleagues). So be prepared to work that out yourself. Try getting an internship at any of the gaming startup (even if they don't pay you) as soon as you get the basic idea.
