The medium of education in all IITs is English. Class lectures, books, and syllabus all are in the English language. However, undertakings have been launched to include the mother tongue for students who are not so fluent in English.

Engineering colleges have learners from various locations who have studied in the local language schools.

Since Engineering words can't be interpreted, some efforts can be made to support them in understanding the lectures.

IIT Kanpur has newly launched the Shivani center for Nurture and reintegration of Hindi and other Indian languages into the engineering courses.
