No, its not mandatory but its advisable to appear for both.But there is no such criteria that student has to attend both the exams as it totally depends on the student as what all exams he/she wants to give. Also, if you want to get admission in B.Tech/B.E then you can choose paper 1 only but if you are interested in B.Arch along with B.Tech then you can go for both the exams.

No. Paper 1 is for Engineering aspirants and Paper 2 is for Architecture and Planning aspirants. You can give the paper which you want to take up as a course. If you want you can appear for both the papers but it is not mandatory to attend both the papers. For example, if you want to study B.E/B.Tech, then you have to appear for Paper 1. If you want to study B.Arch/B.Planning then you have to appear for Paper 2. If you are not sure what you want to study and place your bets on the paper you score the better, you can appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
