Dear Aspirants,

There are many pros and cons of doing postgraduation after your MBBS, just like any other step you take in life. Let's try and understand a few of these. The pros first:

  1. Being a specialist gives you a higher pedestal in the hierarchy of medicine.
  2. You will gain a lot more knowledge and will be an expert at treating diseases related to a specific organ system. You will be the final stop for your patient.
  3. There will be a lot more job satisfaction over the years along with much greater recognition in society. You might also have a fan following with patients if you solve some tough cases that others can't
  4. A lot more monetary gains without doubt along with the associated riches.
  5. A much bigger opportunity to travel the world while attending specialty conferences and lecturing peers if you are of an academic bent of mind.
  6. Publish meaningful research that contributes to literature in your field and influence practice patterns of your peers that might benefit millions of patients in the years to come

The cons:

  1. Spending a lot of extra time and effort to gain the specialty degree and required fellowship, roughly 5 years more.
  2. A lot more financial investment to set up your practice and hence liability (read high EMI till age 50)
  3. Deal with complications and surgical failures/death and learn how to break the bad news.
  4. Managing your practice is a huge responsibility where you are responsible for everything from waste disposal and sterilization to financial and work force management. It can be taxing.
  5. Probably slightly lesser time with family since you will be busy, but this can be managed.

There are plenty more pros and cons but you get the drift of how things might be. A few years after MBBS is the only time you can join PG. You can't do it later so think hard before giving it up. With immense power comes immense responsibility. Be prepared and you will succeed.

Hope this will help you a lot!

Thank you!

Hello there,

Hope you are doing well

It is really difficult to predict an exact cut off for a particular college or particular course since it keeps on changing every year. However looking at previous year's cut off trends for MS in OBG cut off rank were between 8121-9890 at all india level. So it can be really difficult for you to get a government seat with the rank you have mentioned above. You can try getting admission in Private colleges or through management quota, there might be few chances of your admission. I have mentioned list of private colleges below where you can try to get admission:

Christian Medical College, Vellore

SRM, Chennai

PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Coimbatore

Dr Somervell Memorial CSI medical college and Hospital, Karakonam

Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery

Good luck!!

Hi,

To be a candidate for NEET PG doesn't hold any importance from where you did your mbbs, it all depends on your knowledge and diligency.

How meticulously you studied during your mbbs days, how you make the best of your time during your college days, how much you gain from clinical trials is what gets to decide your fate in pg examination.

There have been many examples who did their UG from private universities but still managed to ace their pg. So, you don't need to feel any less from the candidates from government mbbs students.

Stay positive!

Regards.
