The usage of Jute and Fiber technology can be traced back into times as far back as Third Millennium BC. During World War I, Bengal exported a gargantuan amount of Jute sandbags for the trenches. Jute was always found useful in the past, be it in the military, the farms, the ships, Jute was always found being used in one form or another. Jute fiber is easy to produce when compared to cotton.
Even today Jute in its own form as well as in combination with a handful of synthetics is useful industrially and domestically. The Jute And Fiber technology Industry has lots of scope in advancement, in terms of product development, product handling and storage, the discovery of new composites and so on and so forth. This demand can only be met by who has in-hand experience with the material, and not so easily by someone following another discipline.
The Jute and Fiber technology course is highly focused on the Jute Industry, and unless and unless one has a true passion for textiles, this course isn’t recommended for them. As migrating to a different industry can be hard. The above nature of the Jute and Fiber technology course, combined with the limited availability of seats ensures a higher number of opportunities for the aspirants. There are two colleges offering the above course. We’ll discuss further in the sections below.
Eligibility Criteria for both UG and PG
Given the low number of available seats, the demand for them is similarly high. Hence, the criteria are strictly followed to ensure the selection of worthy candidates. The selection process is similar to that of other UG and PG courses. The eligibility for different courses is given below.
1. For Undergraduate Jute and Fiber Technology Engineering Courses
Candidates must have passed 10+2 in regular mode with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Biology subjects with a percentage above 60% aggregate in three subjects.
Candidates must have scored at least 30% marks in English in 10+2.
Candidates must be a citizen of India and should be atleast of 17 years of age.
2. For Postgraduate Agricultural and Food Engineering Courses
Candidates must have graduated B. Tech in Jute Technology or B. Tech in Jute and Fiber Technology or Textile Technology from a recognized University to be eligible for this program.
Candidates must have appeared and qualified in the GATE entrance exam.
Jute and Fiber Technology Engineering Entrance Exams
1. West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE)
The rank scored by a candidate in this exam is used as a selection criterion for the two colleges offering Jute and Fiber Technology courses under the West Bengal State Government. The selection is purely based on merit, so higher the rank, the better are chances.
2. Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE Main), Joint Entrance Exam Advanced (JEE Advanced)
This exam is specifically conducted for IIT aspirants. Even though highly competent this exam gives one access to one of the best facilities in the country, the course offered is “B. Tech in Textile Technology”.
3. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Exam
This exam conducted at All India Level is held as a selection criterion for multiple jobs as well as for higher studies. Here, GATE scores are relevant for commencing M.Tech in Textile Technology.
The selection is carried out in multiple rounds with preference being given to the students with higher percentile and better ranks according to the respective criteria. Different institutions have adopted different methods of selection, with some colleges having their own private exams.
