The postgraduate studies in oceanography and ocean technology are offered by the Department of Physical Oceanography and Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi. This department continues to serve as the chief force in oceanographic education and research for over two decades. The two main offerings of the Department of Physical Oceanography include the M.Tech programme in Ocean Technology and the M.Sc. in Oceanography. Department of Physical Oceanography admission to these programmes is, however, very competitive and merit-based. For Department of Physical Oceanography admission into the M.Tech Ocean Technology Programme, candidates must possess a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score, as admission preferences are first given to candidates with GATE scores. The M.Sc. in Oceanography is offered based on the results from the Common Admission Test (CAT) at CUSAT. This ensures candidates possess an adequate aptitude and foundational knowledge necessary for higher learning in oceanography.
The application process involved for both M.Tech Ocean Technology and M.Sc Oceanography at the Department of Physical Oceanography, CUSAT, follows these steps.
The college provides two courses.
M.Tech Ocean technology course has a duration of 2 years and has a total intake of 12 learners. Selection for admission to M.Tech Ocean Technology is based mainly on the GATE score. Candidates having valid GATE score cards are given first preference and do not have to appear for the Department Admission Test (DAT). Department of Physical Oceanography admission for candidates without a valid GATE score is through the DAT. The programme is aimed at providing the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in ocean technology.
M.Sc Oceanography is a two-year programme that is conducted full-time and has an annual intake of 15 students. Department of Physical Oceanography admission into this M.Sc Oceanography programme is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) administered by CUSAT.
