    The postgraduate studies in oceanography and ocean technology are offered by the Department of Physical Oceanography and Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi. This department continues to serve as the chief force in oceanographic education and research for over two decades. Department of Physical Oceanography admission is facilitated to select the most deserving candidates for its specialised programmes.

    The two main offerings of the Department of Physical Oceanography include the M.Tech programme in Ocean Technology and the M.Sc. in Oceanography. Department of Physical Oceanography admission to these programmes is, however, very competitive and merit-based. For Department of Physical Oceanography admission into the M.Tech Ocean Technology Programme, candidates must possess a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score, as admission preferences are first given to candidates with GATE scores. The M.Sc. in Oceanography is offered based on the results from the Common Admission Test (CAT) at CUSAT. This ensures candidates possess an adequate aptitude and foundational knowledge necessary for higher learning in oceanography.

    Department of Physical Oceanography Application Process

    The application process involved for both M.Tech Ocean Technology and M.Sc Oceanography at the Department of Physical Oceanography, CUSAT, follows these steps.

    • Candidates visit the official CUSAT website or that of the Department of Physical Oceanography to obtain the application form.
    • Applicants must submit the GATE scorecard along with the application if they have a valid score.
    • Candidates without valid GATE scores must apply to take the Department Admission Test (DAT).
    • For M.Sc Oceanography: Register for the Common Admission Test (CAT) by CUSAT.
    • Fill the application form accurately with personal and qualification details.
    • Submit the prescribed mode of payment for the application fee.
    • Submit the application form following all the stipulations of submission within due time.
    • Whether or not shortlisted for the M.Tech applicants without GATE scores, appear for the DAT.
    • For M.Sc. applicants, appear for the CAT as per the schedule released by CUSAT.
    • Wait for the result of the selection process.
    • If selected, the selected candidates will then undergo the admission process, which includes document verification and payment of fee, as per guidelines of the institute.

    Department of Physical Oceanography M.Tech Admission Process

    M.Tech Ocean technology course has a duration of 2 years and has a total intake of 12 learners. Selection for admission to M.Tech Ocean Technology is based mainly on the GATE score. Candidates having valid GATE score cards are given first preference and do not have to appear for the Department Admission Test (DAT). Department of Physical Oceanography admission for candidates without a valid GATE score is through the DAT. The programme is aimed at providing the student with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in ocean technology.

    Department of Physical Oceanography M.Sc. Admission Process

    M.Sc Oceanography is a two-year programme that is conducted full-time and has an annual intake of 15 students. Department of Physical Oceanography admission into this M.Sc Oceanography programme is through the Common Admission Test (CAT) administered by CUSAT.
