Hi aspirant,
If you’re eligible to claim West Bengal domicile, then you should always choose ‘AT’, which is the code for WB domicile candidates. This gives you access to home state quota seats, which come with more reservation benefits and better chances of getting a government seat or a lower fee structure. AZ is for students outside West Bengal, where competition is higher and seats are fewer. Being a dropper doesn't affect your domicile claim what matters is whether you or your parents have lived in West Bengal for at least 10 years, or if you studied in the state for a qualifying period. If you meet the condition, definitely choose AT it gives you a big advantage in WBJEE counselling.
Thank you!
Here is the last year’s WBJEE cutoff for OBC-A category in major government engineering colleges under the Home State quota:
– Kalyani Government Engineering College
CSE closed around rank 5200 to 7000
ECE and EE closed around 8000 to 11000
– Government College of Engineering & Ceramic Technology, Kolkata
CSE closed around 17000
IT closed around 22000
Ceramic branch closed around 43000
– Government College of Engineering & Textile Technology, Serampore
CSE closed around 17800
Electrical and Textile branches went up to 47000 or more
– Government College of Engineering & Leather Technology, Kolkata
IT closed around 23000
Leather Technology closed beyond 50000
Cutoffs vary each year depending on number of applicants, difficulty level, and seat availability. For top branches like CSE, you’ll usually need a rank below 20000 in OBC-A category. Lower-demand branches may go up to 50000 or more.
Sorry, but as a PCB student, you are not eligible for WBJEE. You need to PCM for WBJEE
Absolutely, your son still has options. Even with a 54 percentile in JEE Mains and not appearing for WBJEE, he can still get admission into a B.Tech CSE program, especially through private universities or colleges that offer direct admission or accept JEE scores with no specific cutoff.
Since his 12th board marks are strong at 91%, many private engineering colleges across India — and especially in West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and even some deemed universities — offer admissions based on board merit or low JEE scores. Some of these colleges conduct their own counselling or may have institutional quota seats for students who haven’t cleared WBJEE or scored high in JEE.
For example, colleges like UEM Kolkata, Brainware University, Seacom, Sister Nivedita University, and some AICTE-approved private colleges in West Bengal may admit him through management or general counselling with his 12th marks and JEE percentile. If you're open to colleges in other states, options expand further — institutes like Reva University, Ajeenkya DY Patil, Lovely Professional University, and many others allow direct B.Tech admission.
No, you cannot get admission into IIT Kharagpur (IIT KGP) through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE).
IITs, including IIT KGP, accept admissions solely based on scores obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.
The WBJEE is a separate exam for admission into state-level engineering colleges in West Bengal, not IITs.
GOOD luck!!
