The price of an article is increased by 25% and then reduced by 20%. If the final price is ₹2,400, what was its original price?
A. ₹2,300
B. ₹2,400
C. ₹2,500
D. ₹2,600
Correct answer: B. ₹2,400
Solution:
Let the original price be ₹(x).
After a 25% increase, the price becomes (1.25x).
After a 20% reduction, the final price becomes:
(1.25x \times 0.80 = 2,400)
(x = \frac{2,400}{1.25 \times 0.80})
Since (1.25 \times 0.80 = 1),
(x = ₹2,400)
Therefore, the original price was ₹2,400. The increase and decrease cancel each other because they are calculated on different price bases.
A retailer marks an article 40% above its cost price and offers a discount of 15% on the marked price. If the cost price is ₹2,000, what is the retailer's profit percentage?
A. 15%
B. 17%
C. 19%
D. 25%
Correct answer: C. 19%
Solution:
Cost price = ₹2,000
Marked price:
(2,000 \times 1.40 = ₹2,800)
Discount:
(2,800 \times 15/100 = ₹420)
Selling price:
(2,800 - 420 = ₹2,380)
Profit:
(2,380 - 2,000 = ₹380)
Profit percentage:
(\frac{380}{2,000}\times100 = 19%)
Therefore, the retailer earns a 19% profit.
Question 3: Ratio and Proportion
The monthly incomes of A and B are in the ratio 5:7, and their monthly expenditures are in the ratio 3:4. If A saves Rs. 6,000 per month and B saves Rs. 9,000 per month, what is their combined monthly income?
A. Rs. 30,000
B. Rs. 36,000
C. Rs. 42,000
D. Rs. 48,000
Correct answer: B. Rs. 36,000
Solution:
Let their monthly incomes be 5x and 7x, and their monthly expenditures be 3y and 4y.
Based on their savings:
5x − 3y = 6,000 … (1)
7x − 4y = 9,000 … (2)
Multiplying equation (1) by 4:
20x − 12y = 24,000
Multiplying equation (2) by 3:
21x − 12y = 27,000
Subtracting the first equation from the second gives:
x = 3,000
Substituting x = 3,000 into equation (1):
15,000 − 3y = 6,000
3y = 9,000
y = 3,000
Combined monthly income = 5x + 7x = 12x = Rs. 36,000.
A can complete a job in 15 days, while B can complete the same job in 20 days. They work together for five days, after which A leaves. How many additional days will B take to finish the remaining work?
A. 7 days
B. (8\frac{1}{3}) days
C. 9 days
D. 10 days
Correct answer: B. (8\frac{1}{3}) days
Solution:
A's one-day work = (1/15)
B's one-day work = (1/20)
Combined one-day work:
(\frac{1}{15}+\frac{1}{20}=\frac{7}{60})
Work completed in five days:
(5\times\frac{7}{60}=\frac{7}{12})
Remaining work:
(1-\frac{7}{12}=\frac{5}{12})
B's one-day work is (1/20), so the additional time required is:
(\frac{5}{12}\div\frac{1}{20}=\frac{25}{3})
Therefore, B requires (8\frac{1}{3}) additional days.
If (x+\frac{1}{x}=5), where (x\neq0), what is the value of (x^2+\frac{1}{x^2})?
A. 21
B. 23
C. 25
D. 27
Correct answer: B. 23
Solution:
Given:
(x+\frac{1}{x}=5)
Squaring both sides:
(\left(x+\frac{1}{x}\right)^2=25)
Expanding:
(x^2+2+\frac{1}{x^2}=25)
Therefore:
(x^2+\frac{1}{x^2}=25-2=23)
The required value is 23.

Consistent practice can help improve calculation speed, but reviewing the method behind each answer is equally important. Use the following strategies to make your preparation more effective.
Focus on questions combining percentages, ratios, profit and loss, averages, and time and work. Such questions require you to identify the right sequence of operations instead of applying a single formula.
Practise fractions, percentage conversions, ratio simplification and mental calculations. Avoid rounding intermediate values unless the question specifically allows approximation.
Record the topic, the reason for each mistake and the correct method. Reviewing recurring errors can help you avoid repeating them in timed practice.
