GPAT Subject-wise Weightage 2027: Knowing the GPAT subject-wise weightage 2027 helps you decide where to spend your study time. The exam has 125 questions for 500 marks, and each question carries 4 marks. As per the NBEMS GPAT 2026 bulletin, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics have 38 questions (152 marks) each. Pharmacology has 28 questions, Pharmacognosy has 10, and other B.Pharm subjects have 11. GPAT exam. In this article, we explain the GPAT marks distribution, the marking scheme is +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong one, and the important topics that came up again and again in past papers. This is the official 2026 blueprint, which NBEMS calls indicative, so keep an eye on the GPAT 2027 bulletin for any change. Use it to plan your preparation, but cover the full syllabus.

This is the blueprint from Section 5.3 of the NBEMS GPAT 2026 information bulletin. Each question carries 4 marks.
Subject area (as named by NBEMS) | Questions | Marks | Share of paper |
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and allied subjects | 38 | 152 | 30.4% |
Pharmaceutics and allied subjects | 38 | 152 | 30.4% |
Pharmacology and allied subjects | 28 | 112 | 22.4% |
Pharmacognosy and allied subjects | 10 | 40 | 8.0% |
Other subjects of the B.Pharm course | 11 | 44 | 8.8% |
Total | 125 | 500 | 100% |
The shares are our own arithmetic on the bulletin's numbers. A few things stand out:
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics together have 76 questions. That is 304 marks, or 60.8% of the paper.
Add Pharmacology and the three big subjects cover 104 questions and 416 marks, or 83.2%.
Pharmacognosy has only 10 questions, but it is also the smallest area to revise.
The bulletin does not list which subjects fall under "other subjects", so do not assume a topic is outside the paper just because it is not named here.
NBEMS says the syllabus follows the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) Course Regulations, 2024.
The marking scheme in the 2026 bulletin is simple. A correct answer gives 4 marks, a wrong answer takes away 1 mark, and an unattempted question gives zero. There are 125 four-option questions in English, and the time allowed is 3 hours.
The bulletin also gives an example of five timed sections (A to E) with 25 questions each and 36 minutes per section. It adds that the actual number of sections may vary. If the 2027 paper follows this example, you cannot go back to a finished section, so you need a time plan for each block. On average you get about 86 seconds per question.
Here is what the scheme means for guessing. A blind guess among four options has an expected value of +0.25 marks (one chance in four of +4, three chances in four of −1). Guessing after you have removed even one option is better than that. A guess with no reasoning behind it only helps slightly and can hurt your accuracy.
NBEMS names five areas in the blueprint but does not say which subject goes where. The Careers360 syllabus page lists 19 subjects: Pharmacology, Physical Chemistry, Physical Pharmacy, Organic Chemistry, Dispensing and Hospital Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence, Pharmaceutical Management, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmacognosy, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Biochemistry, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Biotechnology, Pathophysiology and Microbiology.
One more point. Subject totals can be read from the bulletin, but topic-level counts inside each subject (for example, how many questions on rheology) are not published by NBEMS. Any site that gives an exact topic count is giving an estimate.
Since NBEMS does not publish topic-level weightage, we counted it ourselves. We went through 754 questions from the GPAT 2021, 2022, 2023 (two shifts), 2024 and 2025 papers and the 2026 memory-based recall. Please read the limits first:
These sets are compiled or recalled versions, not official papers. The 2024 set has 124 questions, the 2025 set 115 and the 2026 set only 15.
A count is the number of questions that matched a topic's keywords, so the true number is at least this high.
"Papers" is how many of the six full papers (2021, 2022, 2023 Shift 1, 2023 Shift 2, 2024, 2025) had at least one matching question.

Topic | Subject | Matching questions | Papers (of 6) |
Antibiotics and chemotherapy | Pharmacology | 29 | 6 |
Microbiology and immunology | Microbiology | 28 | 6 |
Glycosides, alkaloids and volatile oils | Pharmacognosy | 27 | 6 |
Spectroscopy (UV, IR, NMR, AAS) | Pharmaceutical Analysis | 23 | 6 |
Antiepileptics and other CNS drugs | Pharmacology | 22 | 5 |
Autonomic nervous system drugs | Pharmacology | 20 | 4 |
Schedules and Drugs and Cosmetics Act | Jurisprudence | 15 | 6 |
Emulsions, HLB and surfactants | Pharmaceutics | 15 | 5 |
Pharmacokinetics, bioavailability and BCS | Biopharmaceutics | 14 | 6 |
Titrations and indicators | Pharmaceutical Analysis | 13 | 4 |
Stability, ICH and climatic zones | Pharmaceutics | 12 | 6 |
Stereoisomerism | Organic Chemistry | 12 | 6 |
Micromeritics and powders | Physical Pharmacy | 12 | 5 |
Named organic reactions | Organic Chemistry | 11 | 6 |
Dissolution and apparatus | Pharmaceutics | 10 | 6 |
Rheology | Physical Pharmacy | 9 | 5 |
The pattern is clear. Pharmacology topics (antibiotics, CNS and autonomic drugs) show up often, which fits its 28-question share. Pharmaceutical Chemistry is spread over spectroscopy, stereochemistry and named reactions. In Pharmaceutics, emulsions, stability and dissolution come back in most papers.
Topics can also swing from year to year. Autonomic drugs had 20 matches overall, but none in the 2024 and 2025 sets we have, and titrations had 6 matches in the 2025 set but none in 2021. A topic that is missing for one year is not a reason to skip it. For examples of specific questions that came back reworded, see the GPAT previous year question papers with solutions.
Weightage tells you where the marks are. It does not tell you how fast you can learn each subject. These are practical ways to use the table:
Split study time by marks first. Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics are 60.8% of the paper, so they should get the largest block of your time. Then adjust for your own weak spots.
Do not skip Pharmacognosy because it is small. Ten questions is 40 marks, and glycosides, alkaloids and volatile oils appeared in all six papers we counted.
Do not ignore the 11 "other subjects" questions. That is 44 marks, and the bulletin does not say which subjects they cover, so revise the smaller subjects in your syllabus too.
Practise by topic, not just by year. Grouping past questions by concept shows you the different ways one fact gets asked.
Time yourself in 25-question blocks of 36 minutes, since that is the section example in the bulletin.
Check the 2027 bulletin when it is out. If NBEMS changes the blueprint, update your plan the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
As per the NBEMS GPAT 2026 bulletin, the indicative split is 38 questions from Pharmaceutical Chemistry, 38 from Pharmaceutics, 28 from Pharmacology, 10 from Pharmacognosy and 11 from other B.Pharm subjects, for 125 questions and 500 marks. The GPAT 2027 bulletin was not confirmed at the time of writing, so this may change.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics have the highest weightage in the bulletin, with 38 questions (152 marks) each. Together they are 60.8% of the paper.
NBEMS calls the blueprint indicative, so the exact split can change. The total of 125 questions and 500 marks is the same in all the past papers we looked at. Topic-level counts inside a subject change from year to year, which is why you should cover the full syllabus.
