The Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DYPIPSR) is located in the educational hub of Pune in Maharashtra. The college is affiliated to the Savitri Phule Pune University. This affiliation, ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission). The college has also been accredited by both the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) and the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in the latter. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. While it was started only in 1994, its association with the Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth ensures that it is part of a much larger group.
The Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth was set up back in 2003 in Pune. Known as the DPU, the university started with only a single institute, but has now grown to be a very big brand all over Maharashtra. The group has become synonymous with educational excellence, all over western India. The university has been named after Dr. D.Y. Patil who has been a noted educationist and social reformer, all his career. A number of educational institutions, research organizations and sports academies have been named after him, due to his work in getting them started. The DPU now runs academic institutions for the academic areas of- Engineering, Law, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Education, Nursing, Dental, Bio Technology, Management and even one for Ayurveda.
The courses at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research have been ratified by the PCI (Pharmacy Council of India), as is the norm for such programmes in the country. These courses are available here, right from the UG till doctoral levels. The B. Pharm is the primary course at the undergrad level. It is a four- year programme. The M. Pharm on the other hand is a two- year programme for the master’s stage. There is also an intermediate D. Pharm which is a diploma programme, primarily aimed at practitioners. In addition, one may pursue doctoral programmes, as well here.
The entire academics is run by a cohort of departments or faculties. The Faculty exist in the areas of – Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and in Pharmacognosy. The students are trained as per the standards laid down on official prescriptions established by bodies such as the WHO (World Health Organization). Research is also an important part of this institute. For this, there is a separate R&D Cell on campus. The DYPIPSR is also engaged in several consulting assignments for the industry. A number of MOUs have also been signed with industry partners, to help generating such assignments. It also helps in getting students to be trained as per industry standards, so they may be more employable.
The DYPIPSR has had MOUs with– the Tata Chemicals, RASA Life Science Informatics, DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization), AISSMS College of Pharmacy, the MCP and the Maharashtra Institute of Pharmacy. The DYPIPSR has taken on consulting assignments with the likes of- Emami, JIWA, Dr. Dozo Laboratories, Garware Healthcare, MKPPL, AJAY Bio Tech and SAVA Life. Thrust areas have been defined per department. Some of the important areas on which research has been taking place are skin reconstruction, ANS, anti- diabetic activities, herbal formulations and tissue toxicity, plus more. The faculty members have also been published on various recognized academic and research peer- reviewed journals. Some of these publications where the faculty of DYPIPSR have been published in are- Asian Journal of Research in Chemistry, International Journal of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Analysis, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacology and the World Journal of Pharmaceuticals Research besides others.
Another area of much importance to the institute is entrepreneurship. This is why the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) has been an active forum here. It helps develop the budding entrepreneurs among the students for the institute. Experienced trainers and entrepreneurs are invited to campus to deliver guest lectures and interact with those who have such business models. Some MOUs have even been signed with a few companies to help students in their business incubation ideas. These are with Cognizant, Glaxo Smith Kline and FUEL (Friends Union for Energising Lives). The Griffith College in Ireland is the main knowledge partner for this.
Students have also been sent on frequent industrial visits, to acquaint them with how the manufacturing process of medicines works. Everest Pharma, Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research and Ayurved Rasashala have been the major visits, within Pune itself. The placements at the DYPIPSR have also been kept going up over time. Some of the key recruiters in recent seasons have been the likes of- TCS, Glenmark, L’Oréal, USV, Hetero, Impulse, Agio, ALKEM Laboratories, Impulse, Sava, Cipla, Piramal, Sun Pharma, GSK, Danone Nutricia, Zuventus, Excel Life Sciences, Okasa, Neon Laboratories and others.
