I am assuming you are from general category. Based on your overall academic profile, you will need to score atleast 99.5 percentile to get a call for the next round.

You can't get in any of old IIMs with just 98 percentile if you are engineer except IIM I which give a lot more weightage to 10th, 12th and graduation marks even more than CAT marks. As you have good academic so with 98 percentile you can get a call from IIM I.

But for getting in IIM A, B, C seeing the last few years trends you need to get above 99.7 percentile. Every college has complex and unique process of selection. In IIM A there is a min score which you need to attend with the parameters like all academic marks, engineer or non engineer, gender in order to get eligible for getting a call for interview round. One of my friend because of its poor academic record didn't got a call from IIM A and B even after scoring 99.83 percentile.

You don't need to worry as you have a pretty good academic records so aim for scoring above 99.7 percentile that will definitely get you call from IIM A and C.

For IIM B it is further more complicated procedure as it gives way more weightage to work experience or excellent academic records like scoring above 97% in 10th and 12th. I have seen one of my friend with 97 percentile got a call from IIM B becuase of excellent academic records as I mentioned above and other one with 99.87 percentile with a good academic record didn't got a call. So its too complicated and also depends on your competitors.

So prepare well and aim for a very high percentile if you have ambition to get enrolled in IIM A, B, C.
