Can I join IIM Ahmedabad using GMAT rather than going for CAT?

Priyaanka Sarkar Student Expert 14th Oct, 2019

Dear Akshat, CAT is exclusively conducted by the IIMs. So the selection for admission to any of the 20 IIMs is through CAT exam. Unfortunately no other score except for CAT score is accepted for IIM Ahmedabad. You can check their selection process at: https://www.iima.ac.in/web/pgp/apply/domestic/admission/selection-process

I am from SC category.. Graduated in bachelor in veterinary science.. I have average academic profile... How much should i score to get FABM and ABM of IIMA and IIML.... As i have graduation in allied agriculture so will it hamper my chances?

Vemireddy Rushitha Student Expert 15th Oct, 2019

Hello Aspirant,

As you have mentioned that you belong to SC category, you should have a minimum of 60 percent and above to make it into any of the above mentioned colleges. Therefore make sure to get this percent. The course that you have already persued might not add up as your advantage since it is not related to the field you are applying.

Good luck!

i have 94 in 10th and 95 in 12th....how much percentage should i need to score in my graduation ..so that i may get a call from IIM A,B,C and also how much should i aim in Cat exam?

Rehan Alam Student Expert 10th Oct, 2019

Dear Aspirant,

The ideal profile for getting a call from holy trinity ABC is 90+ in 10th and 12th and 85+ in graduation and 1.5 years of work experience. After this profile 95 percentile will fetch you a call from one of ABC and 98+ will definitely get you a call from ABC and FMS also.

However, generally students having graduation from BCOM/ECONOMICS fields can get a call at 75% also as the IIMs give preference for candidates having non engineer background.

Hope this helps. Thank You.

My 10th percetage is 87,12th is 90,graduation is 62. Am I eligible to get call from IIM A,B,C if I get 90-100 pecentile in CAT.

Sujata Tripathi 9th Oct, 2019

According to the official criteria given by the IIMs, the minimum graduation percentage required is 50% for General category and 45% for reserved category. So, strictly on the basis of that, you'll be eligible. However, satisfying the eligibility criteria is not a sure-shot assurance for admission. IIM A,B,C especially have a very high standard when it comes to taking admissions. So, try to keep your percentile above 97 and good luck.

I have 81.8%,74.8%,88.95% in 10,12 and B.com(Hons). How much percentile I scored in cat 2019 to get IIM A,B,C call?

Priyaanka Sarkar Student Expert 28th Sep, 2019
Dear Chandan, there are 20 IIMs and each has its own selection process.Because CAT exam will be held at different slots, CAT scores will be normalised to ensure equivalence in the difficulty levels of the exams for both slots. IIM Kozikhode will normalise the CAT scores using percentile equivalence. Adjustment of location and scale differences of score distributions across different norms and then scores will be normalised. The 20 IIMS and all the Participating Institutions will announce their Cut offs. The cut off is prepared after checking various factors. MBA aspirants will have to apply separately to all the Colleges that accept CAT scores. While CAT score remains the main criteria for selection, IIMs also consider other factors like previous academic performance, work experience, gender and Academic diversity. CAT exam paper can be Categorised into 3 parts:

Quantitative Ability

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

We shall enlist the admission criteria of all the 3 IIMS here:

IIM AHMEDABAD:

QA DLR VARC Overall

General: 70 70 70 80

NC-OBC/Trans: 65 65 65 75

SC: 60 60 60 70

ST: 50 50 50 60

PwD-UR,OBC,SC: 60 60 60 70

PwD: ST: 50 50 50 60

At different stages of Selection process, Application rating process is included. The complete list of rating at various levels can be looked at: https://www.iima.ac.in/web/pgp/apply/domestic/admission/selection-process

IIM BANGALORE:

QA DLR VARC Overall

General: 80 80 85 90

NC-OBC: 70 70 75 80

SC: 65 65 70 75

ST: 60 60 60 70

PwD: 50 50 50 60

For all the Candidates shortlisted, the 10th and 12th board results are initially adjusted by dividing each such score by 90th percentile score of that board. And then an adjusted score is calculated for the Bachelors degree for each of the candidates based on the final scores obtained by the candidate are used for the Bachelors degree and professional degrees. For example,

CAT = 40

10th board = 20

12th board = 10

Bachelors = 20

Gender Diversity = 2

Work Experience = 8

The 40 points for CAT are derived from the performance in each of the three sections as follows:

Verbal & Reading Comprehension - 14 points

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning - 16 points Quantitative Aptitude - 10 points.

IIM CALCUTTA:

QA DLR VRC Over All

OPEN: 75 80 80 85

NC-OBC: 65 65 70 75

EWS: 65 65 70 75

SC: 60 60 65 70

ST: 55 55 55 65

PWD: 55 55 55 65

And the final selection is based on:

CAT 2019 Score 30

Personal Interview 48

Written Ability Test 10

Academic Diversity 04

Work Experience 08

Total 100

Going by all these selection criteria if you score 90% and above in CAT 2019, you can get a call from these 3 IIMs. And the final selection depemds on your WAT and PI round performances.Your chances at IIM Ahmedabad are more because of their changed policy. Priyaanka Sarkar Student Expert 23rd Sep, 2019

IIMs shortlist candidates for the interview stage based on their own criteria, which may be independent of each other. The process may include Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interviews. Performance in the CAT examination is an important component in the admission process. IIMs may additionally use other factors such as the previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience, gender and academic diversity and other similar inputs in shortlisting and ranking of candidates at various stages of the admission process. The processes, academic cut-offs and the weights allocated to the evaluation parameters may vary across IIMs.
