Course Overview

The Swayam portal gives registered candidates access to the Environmental Studies course. The Indian government’s objective in developing Swayam was to make education accessible to even the most disadvantaged sections of society.

The courses on Swayam are given free of charge even though the study material for the course is made by a handful of the best teachers around the country. However, candidates hoping to earn a certificate for the course from Swayam will have to finish all their assessments and pay the exam fees for the final exam.

The course has been created by the Head of the Department of Life Sciences (Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya) at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh College of Professional Sciences, Indore, MP, Dr. Monica Jain.

The Environmental Studies course has also been introduced by UGC in the teaching module for undergraduate courses in all higher education institutions of the country. Step 2: Then go to ‘Sign-in/Register’

Step 3: Open a new account, or if you already have a Swayam account log-in to that existing account

Step 4: For a new account, Swayam asks candidates for their email id, username, and a password

Step 5: The email id needs to be verified by a code mailed from Swayam to complete the registration process

Step 6: Those candidates keen to get a certificate need to pay the exam fee and give the final exam

Evaluation process

In order to get certified, candidates have to pay the end-term exam fee
The end-term exam is a proctored exam
It is held on a specified date
Candidates can give the exam at any of the examination centres available around them
For the certification, 30 percent of the marks come from in-course assessment and 70% from the end-term exam

Swayam was born out of the government of India’s attempt to bridge the digital divide in education. The Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India authorizes the Swayam portal and all its courses.

2: What are the credentials of Dr. Monica Jain, who designed the Environmental Studies course?

Dr. Jain has 17 years of undergraduate and 15 years of post-graduate teaching experience. She is the HOD of the Life Sciences Department (Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya) at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh College of Professional Sciences, Indore, MP. Her area of specialization is Plant Biotechnology and she has had her research published and discussed in various national and international journals and conferences.

3: What is the required time commitment for the course?

The teaching for the Environmental Studies course by Swayam is completed within 12 weeks and an end-term exam is conducted at the end of twelve weeks.

4: Can I attempt the end-term exam online, from my home?

No, candidates cannot answer the end-term exam from their home. They need to visit an exam centre near them and answer the exam in-person on the specified day.

5: What is the fee structure for the course?

Enrollment in Swayam courses is 100 percent free. But there is an exam fee for final certification exams.

6: What are the certification qualifying details?

For the Environmental Studies course, 30 percent of the grade comes from in-course assessments and 70 percent from the end-term exam. Only students who clear the passing criterion for the course can get certified.
