Solution : Let the original number of watermelons as $x$.
According to the problem, the fruit seller sells 45% of the watermelons, which means he still has 55% of the watermelons left.
According to the question,
$\frac{55x}{100} = 495$
$⇒x = \frac{495×100}{55} = 900$
Hence, the correct answer is 900.
