The presence of alcholic group (-OH) can be identified by Ferric Chloride Test where reagent is a solution of anhydrous iron(III) chloride FeCl in an organic solvent like chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. Phenols react with FeCl solution to give a coloured complex. Alcohols do not give this reaction.
