The future is doubtful for most of the B. Tech degree holders. The people who make policies on technical education are not sure whether to impart fundamental knowledge of engineering to the students or to train them to become suitable for engineering jobs in the industry. Ideally, without fundamental concepts, it makes little sense to get trained in advanced engineering and technology; but then how much time and effort should be spent on learning the basics?

I passed out of one of the NITs 28 years ago and before answering this question I went and checked the B. Tech (Mech) syllabus in our NIT's website. Surprisingly, the syllabus only had a little makeover in nearly 3 decades - and I am talking about a premier institute in the country! Even the lab experiments have changed little. In fact, I felt that the B. Tech degree can be renamed as Bachelor of Applied Physics, Chemistry and Math.

There are two problems - (a) outdated syllabus not in alignment with the current technologies used in industries and (b) gap in perspectives between academics and industry about what to teach and how to develop capabilities in students. The syllabus needs regular updates and I feel academics are not even sure how to go about it. As technology evolves, we cannot learn all the basics in detail, if we also have to learn new technological advances. In addition, academics are clear that teaching and training are different and the academic institutes' job is to teach the concepts only while the industry should take the responsibility of training the students as necessary for performing in the job. In contrast, industry expects fully trained students who can be productive for the companies from day one.
