anode rays do not originate from cathode ...what does this mean why it depends on nature of gas

The anode rays do not originate from cathode as well as anode too. They are produced in between the two. It is believed that the rays are produced as a result of knockout of electrons from the gaseous atom, by bombardment of high speed electrons of cathode ray. Thus, te rays are produced between the Space of anode and cathode. As the size of electrons and the other nucleons differ for each gas, Thus, it is said that they depend on the nature If the gas. size of nucleons differ??? i didnt get it...

Riya Different nucleons means no. of neutrons+protons is different for different gases. For e.g. H gas and He gas. H(protium) has 1 proton and no neutron and He has 2 protons and 2 neutrons, and H is more reactive than He as He is inert gas. So nature of gases depends on nucleons. Hope it helps.
