PhD is itself a research work. There you will get recognized as a research scientist.  You can go for PhD after your Masters. For masters degree , you have to graduate first.
So, prepare accordingly and use a step by step process to go through.
After graduation you will know many things from your seniors and teachers.
At that you will know how to move and what you should do as per your interest.
