Hello,

I hope you are doing well. As per your mentioned query, there is no need to have biology background for these courses. If you had PCM in your class 12th then you can also do this course.

I hope this helps you!

Thank you!

Hello,

For engineering programs ( B. Tech/ B.E ) PCM students are eligible for both Biotechnology and Biomedical engineering in most of the colleges.

However, for B.Sc Biotech, PCB is often required.

Hello Bhavanna,

yes, a non biology student can pursue biotechnology or biomedical engineering, but most colleges require Physics, chemistry, and mathematics(PCM) in 12th grade. some universities offer biotech programs for PCM students, focusing more on computational andengineering aspects. however for more biological subjects having biology in 12th maay be preferred or required.

Yes, a non-bio student can pursue Biotechnology or Biomedical Engineering, but it depends on the specific course and the college's eligibility criteria.

1.biotechnology

  • Eligibility: Traditionally, many Biotechnology programs, especially B.Sc. in Biotechnology or M.Sc. in Biotechnology, require students to have studied Biology in Class 12. This is because the course involves biological principles, genetic engineering, molecular biology, etc.
  • However, for B.Tech in Biotechnology (engineering-based), some institutions may admit students from a non-bio background (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics - PCM), focusing on the engineering and technological aspects of biotechnology. In this case, your background in Physics and Chemistry could still make you eligible, though some colleges might expect basic knowledge of biology, which may be covered in the first year of the program.

2.biomedical engineering

  • Eligibility: Biomedical Engineering is a technical field combining engineering and medical principles. For B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering, most colleges accept students from a non-bio background (i.e., PCM), as the course is rooted in engineering and technology, with a focus on developing medical devices, technologies, and solutions.
  • While having a basic understanding of biology is helpful, it is generally not a mandatory prerequisite for Biomedical Engineering, especially at the undergraduate level.

Hi Bhavaana, Yes you can pursue biotechnology, biomedical engineering without biology in class 12, while biology is not always a strict requirement for admission to biotechnology, biomedical programs, if you had provided with strong foundation in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) in class 12.

You may need to take entrance exams like JEE main, JEE advanced, KCET, or MHT CET depending on the college and program you're applying.
