Yes , an Ece student can become software engineer if you  have  proper skills and knowledge about how to develop a software . If you know how to write codes and algorithms , you can definitely become a software engineer.  You should know the in and out of the software  for example  : its database , its design , its development  , the tools  and have the ability to fix any issues  and apply any modification to be done and also have the ability to learn deeply and solve any problem.
