Compartment exam is for those students who have failed in one of the five main subjects in the board exam with the option to reappear for them without having to repeat their 12th year again.

In a year, you can give compartment exam for a maximum of two papers. If you fail in more than two subjects, then you will have to repeat one year and give improvement exam. This is according to the CBSE website.
