Yes, you can definitely get in the research field with IT majors. After a Bachelors and a Masters degree, you can apply for a PhD which will introduce you to the research field.
One thing you got to make sure though is that you get excellent papers published during your PhD which shall enhance your credentials as a successful scientist.
