Hello ,

Characteristics of Tight Junctions :

  • These are also known as zona occludens
  • Play major role in maintaining epidermal barrier permeability by regulating the paracellular flux of water soluble molecules between adjacent cells
  • They help in formation of blood brain barrier.
  • Major tight junction proteins are Claudins and Occludins
  • Tight junctions are responsible for resorption of magnesium ion from thick ascending loop of henle
  • Mutation in tight junction protein claudin leads to familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis.
