Civil and Mechanical are both great branches of engineering... This question can be answered only on the basis of one’s interest. Both are evergreen fields whose scope cannot and need not be calculated. The only difference one can assess on is how graduates from either of the fields build their base. For Civil Engineering you are more involved in field work at open space unlike Mechanical Engineering whose work involves mostly in a closed environment. By intensity, both are equally cumbersome but Civil gets the extra edge due to the environment. Mechanical Engineers have a better option in diversifying their knowledge apart from Thermal Engines, etc.

Here are some things you should consider before opting:

1 - Physics is the base for both.
Both civil and mechanical equally require through knowledge of applied physics and material science - solid and fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics, physical properties of materials etc. If you not are a physics person, you should seriously reconsider some other branch.

2 - Syllabus.
Even though the base for both the branches is physics, the syllabus differs immensely. It is suggested that you take a look at the syllabus of both the branches.
Just by browsing through the syllabus you will get an idea of what you will be studying for the next 4 years.

3 - Talk to working engineers.
Talk to working engineers about the work they do.
I can't stress on how much important it is. This is the single most important source of accurate and up to date information about the kind of work you will be doing in the future.
Talk to your family members who are currently studying or practicing.

You will find that civil engineering is not just about 'construction'. You don't just build dams, skyscrapers, canals, tunnels etc.
A civil engineer DESIGNS. They have to analyze whether the structure will stand strong for the next 75 years.

Jobs:

You cannot go wrong with any branch. Both civil and mechanical engineers have an ever rising demand. If you choose to work hard and cut the bullshit, sky is the limit.

State and the Central Government recruit engineers from both the branches.
You just have to pass their entrance tests. Depending on your score, you could land a super class one or a class one post.

You can start your own business too. Civil and mechanical engineering are the type of branches which provide the kind of knowledge that can be immediately applied to create physical objects. Objects that are ready for sale immediately. So you can create a really awesome construction company which exclusively specializes in building 5 star hotels. Or you can create a team which maintains the largest land drill in your country!

Both the branches are unique by themselves. It only depends on your Interest & Passion, and now the choice is yours. Do what u can do better.

More often than not, it is the matter of personal preferences. If you get overwhelmed by the structures and construction, civil engineering is the one for you. If you are intrigued by the machine designs, their mechanics and dynamics, go for mechanical engineering.
