Hello Mahankalihemu,

What is chemical engineering?

  • It is a branch of engineering which works closely the control, design, construction, installation, supervision and operation of the the equiplments used for manufacturing chemical products and the plants which are involved in this.
  • It experiments and researches about synthetic and man-made substitutes of existing natural material and resources. Chemical engineers work in close tandem with other industries like fuel cells, noanotechnology, biotechnology and biomedical sciences.
  • A chemical engineer needs to know the chemistry, chemical property, environmental control and analysis involved in the manufacture of chemical products.
  • A chemical engineer specializes in the fllowing domains- biomedical engineering, electronic materials, physics, food processing, process engineer, energy, electronic materials, electrochemistry, safety, electronic engineers, environmental safety and impacts, process control, biochemistry, polymers, statistics etc.

Courses in Chemical Engineering:

  • Diploma Course: The diploma courses are for a duration of three years after a candidate completes their 12th grade examinations.
  • Udergraduate Degree Courses: You can either opt for a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree course. The duration of these courses ranges between three to four years after a candidate completes their 12th grade examination.
  • Postgraduate Degree Courses: Based on your undergraduate study you choose whether you need to Master of Technology (M.Tech.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.). The duration of this course is two years after a candidate completes their undergraduate study.
  • Some universities also allow candidates to choose an integrated five year programme. This programme leads to Master of Technology (M.Tech.).

Eligibilty:

  • In order to be eligible for these courses a candidate must have completed his 12th with physics, chemistry and mathematics as their core subjects. The aggregate percentage required is approximately 50%
  • Entrance examination which are necessary for admissions include JEE Main, JEE Advance, GATE etc. Along with these national level examinations, there are many state and university based examinations also conducted.

Top Colleges offering these courses:

  • IIT Madras, Chennai

Scope and job aspects after this course:

  • A chemical engineer can work in the industry which deals with medicine, cosmetics, paper, textile, food and drinks, fuel, metallurgy, oil and gas etc.
  • Chemical engineers have job opportunities opening up in both the field of engineering and technical aspects, and chemistry.
  • Chemical engineers get employed in research organizations, multinational companies, oil and gas industry, energy industry, food industry, chemical products manufacturing units, utility companies, government department, pharmaceuticals etc.
  • Top recrutiers include HPCL, Indian Oil, BPCL, GAIL, Piramal Helathcare, Ranbaxy, Pfizer, HLL, Nirma etc.
  • Fresh graduates at an average earn around INR 20,000 to 25,000 per month. However, these salaries increase with increase in position in the career ladder and experience. The higher the education you have achieved the better are your chances are at getting good jobs.
