In  semiconductor physics, the depletion region is  a region where flow of charge carriers are decreased over a given time and finally results in empty mobile charge carriers or full of immobile charge carriers.

It is so named as it is formed from a conducting region by removal of all free charge carriers, leaving none to carry a current.
