Whether to go for a specialization or do a general MBA completely depends on what kind of job you are looking for post an MBA. It also depends on what kind of skills and knowledge you want to build during your MBA. 

Specialized MBA programs are meant to provide a direction to your career. These programs provide you with a focused career. It provides the right launch to your career. Specialist MBA is specially preferred in fields like Retail, infrastructure, Banking, Finance Insurance etc.

While General Management makes you jack of all, specialized MBA makes you master of one. General MBA and specialized MBA have their own strengths and weaknesses. In my personal opinion, a specialized MBA is slightly better out of the two options. 

However, you may compare the two by looking at the factors below and decide for yourself:

Strengths of General MBA

– The General MBA Program provides holistic learning.

– It allows you to learn all the nitty-gritties of management.

– It will surely ensure a wider knowledge base and you can shift to other sectors.

Weaknesses of General MBA

– You don’t have in-depth knowledge of any sector.

– When you begin your career, you don’t have a specialized area to join.

Strengths of Specialized MBA

– Specialized MBA provides you with in depth knowledge about your field.

– You are prepared to face a particular market.

– You are not confused regarding your career as you have a focused career path.

Weaknesses of Specialized MBA

– Your knowledge is limited to only your area of study.

– You don’t have many options in terms of pursuing a career.

– In case you opt for a wrong specialization then it will hamper your entire career unlike general MBA
