"Left" should be replaced with "had left" to agree with the intended tense form of the sentence. "Had left" is used to maintain the sentence in the past perfect tense. 

This is because the action of reaching the railway station happened in the past, and the action of the train leaving happened before that. The past perfect tense describes an action that happened before another action in the past. 

Therefore, the correct sentence is: "We had to return because when we reached the railway station, the train had left."
