Just using common sense, why would companies want to select a student who has a CGPA of 5 as compare to the 8 and the 9 pointers? This naturally gives way to a cutoff criteria for them based on your CGPA until the previous semester.

This cutoff, however, varies for different companies. The general range is between 6-7 CGPA.
