Yes Passing certificate and Mark-sheets both are different. Maharshtra board issues both:

10th mark sheet contains details and scores of all subjects.

10th passing certificate contains a sentence which mentions whether you have passed or failed the exam along with scores of all subjects. They look pretty much the same except an extra sentence is added.

Also, 10th mark sheet is issued very quickly which helps during admission processes whereas you have to collect the passing certificate from your school after 6–8 months.
