To put it simply, ferrous metals are metals that have iron in them. Iron-based metals don't. The fact that foundries might specialise in working with ferrous, non-ferrous, or both types of metals is one of the main differences. Any metal that contains iron is referred to as ferrous; non-ferrous metals do not.
