If u really want to crack at once start ur preparation from that instance u started thinking about it.....and try to focus on only one thing....but for best result 2nd yr is the best

You know there is no best time to start Gate preparations

You can start it as early as you get the gut feeling to crack it.

According to me, 2nd year would be the best time to start yourself warming up for the next two tough years.
Start preparing notes of your core subject papers so that you can refer them in future.
2nd year is the base, so build your base as strong as you can. You'll have lot time, so you can give time on reading other books related to your topics for extra knowledge.
make proper notes for each topic or subject so later it will be easy for you to revise

Revise the notes after semester exam finish

Solve problems of your course book.

Then after in later years, you indulge yourself wholly in the syllabus of Gate.

This strategy would definitely help you .

Also you should make sure you go through syllabus and previous year cut off to know more

You should start preparing after 2nd year or in the end of 2nd year. Buy some coaching classes hand written notes and study material preferably of made easy or ace. Also read course books carefully.
