AB and BA cannot be just any two matrices. They must have the same determinant, where for 2 × 2 matrices, The determinant function has the remarkable property that

det(AB) = det(A) det(B).

So we have det

(AB) = det(A) det(B)

= det(B) det(A)

= det(BA)
