One basic thing which we all need to understand is that, when a habitat is destroyed, the carrying capacity for indigenous plants, animals, and other organisms is reduced so that populations decline, sometimes up to the level of extinction.

Habitat destruction renders entire habitats functionally unable to support the species present; biodiversity is reduced in this process when existing organisms in the habitat are displaced or destroyed. ... The primary cause of species extinction worldwide is habitat destruction. Hence , Habitat loss is perhaps the greatest threat to organisms and biodiversity.
