See your backlogs will actually not matter during MBA admissions , but you have to clear your backlogs first before joining MBA in any college . Regarding your educational background also it will matter in some colleges like IIM'S , but other than IIM'S there are also many good colleges in India . Never let your past ruine your future . You can appear for CAT /XAT exam if you have 50% in graduation and final year students can also apply for CAT .  Getting calls from top colleges will be difficult because they do complete evaluation before selecting the students . If you do well in CAT/ XAT exam like score above 95 percentile in CAT , you may get a call . But if you show any work experience for a year or two , there will be little more  changes to get a call . Also your category will also depend , if you are from SC or ST category you know their changes of getting admission is better than a general category student . But it is not end of the world , do well in your CAT first do not think of admissions . There are also students not getting in IIM'S or any top MBA  college but they even get package of RS 20 lakhs per annum. It is because of their knowledge and skills . So do well . All the best

CAT exam eligiblity criteria are that the candidate must complete his/her graduation with a 3-year course of bachelor degree and secure 50% (45% for SC/ST/PWD) or more marks.
Students who are in the final year of their graduation can also apply. There is no upper age limit for appearing in the exam. So, the minimum eligibility for CAT exam does not require a high score in 12th standard.

However, the selection procedure in different institutes and IIMs is different. Each IIM is an autonomous institute, and set up different criteria for CAT exam selection process. A candidates overall academic career besides CAT score are taken into account while making the final merit list. Weightage is given to 10th, 12th, graduation marks, extracurricular activities, and work experiences of a candidate. Based on the selection criteria and cut-off set by different institutes, a candidate is called for group discussion and personal interview rounds. Since hundreds of thousands of candidates fiercely compete every year for a place management institutes, the weightage of 10th, 12th marks in CAT cannot be ignored. Some of the IIMs give below 10% weightage to 12th standard percentage of marks, while some IIMs give as high as 50% weightage to a candidates 12th standard score.

Though it is more pragmatic to check the selection criteria of this year, but one cannot go back to his/her 12th standard score and improve it. It is always good to have a brilliant score in both the board exams iF someone is eyeing to get a seat in the countrys leading B-schools. Even if a particular management school is not giving much importance to class 12 marks, when two or more students secure same score in CAT, always higher scorer in 12th standard will be given preference.

The management schools who produce future managers for different corporate houses, always look for candidates who have been performing consistently throughout their academic career. So, board exam result of class 10th and 12th act as an integral part in selection process of the management schools, but not for appearing in the CAT exam. CAT is an online examination of 3 hours duration.The questions in the exam will be of MCQ and TITA type totaling 100 questions. MCQ are multiple choice questions, for which candidates get multiple answer choices. Whereas,TITA is Type In the Answer which means you need to write the answer in the text box that is provided. The Verbal Ability section and Data interpretation-Logical Reasoning section have 24 MCQ questions each. Quantitative Ability has 25 MCQ questions totalling up to 75 questions. The Type in the Answer questions are 25 in number.

Each Question has 3 marks and a wrong answer takes away 1 mark. However Type in the Answer questions are exempted from Negative Marking.

First things first, know the syllabus. And go through the previous papers to analyse and prepare a comprehensive plan and set priorities according to the importance of different topics across sections.

Customise your own study plan based on your strengths and weaknesses. Gauge your preparation from time to time by taking mock tests. Solve questions to check your levels of preparation but not to set any targets. Remember, its ok to have cheat days and relax.
