IIT Madras administers the HSEE, a national entrance exam for admission to master's programmes in HSS. The exact number of participants who took the exam this year is unknown, although 3,464 pupils did so in 2019.

The cut-off varies from year to year and is determined by the category; for example, a general category student must achieve a minimum 50 percentile to be admitted. OBC, SC, and ST students scored in the 45th, 40th, and 45th percentiles, respectively.

Last year, the highest HSEE score was 133.
